By all accounts, last year’s series of open-air screenings at Spinningfields was a big success, helped along by the handy provision of popcorn, picnic hampers and deckchairs. So it’s great to see the series returning tomorrow, Thursday 20 May, with Control:

The Screenfields film season launches with the biography of local lad and Joy Division frontman, Ian Curtis. For Joy Division and New Order fans everywhere, the film charts Joy Division’s rise to success, their relationship with Factory Records and the personal turmoils of Ian himself. Screened to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Curtis’ death, this is a must-see for anyone passionate about the Manchester music scene. Stars Sam Riley and Samantha Morton.

And, er, afterwards you can get two-for-one entry into some place called FAC251?

Tenuous asides aside, Screenfields is the kind of free public event that Manchester needs more of – especially with the likes of Leon, Spirited Away, The Quiet Man and The Italian Job scheduled in for future screenings. But what better way to kick off this year’s season than with a depressing Manchester-centred film? It begins at 8.30pm.

There’s nothing better than going for a five-hour wander – particularly when Manchester offers blue skies, not grey clouds, overhead. That’s exactly what I did yesterday, and I returned with the following knowledge:

The infrequently used platform 12 at Piccadilly Station is currently showing off Manchester’s music venues, past and present, with a photography exhibition. All those you expect to be there are, plus a couple of surprises, such as the Jolly Angler pub, just behind the station, and the Hardrock Concert Theatre in Stretford. Turns out the latter, a 3000-capacity venue, hosted shows by David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Lou Reed, Bob Marley, James Brown and Elton John!

The 16th outing of Viva!, the Spanish and Latin American film festival, kicked off yesterday at Cornerhouse. From reading through the brochure, Solo Quiero Caminar (Just Walking) looks to be one potential highlight – especially ‘if your dream film is a mash up of Pulp Fiction and The A-Team’, as someone described it earlier. That’s on tomorrow, Monday 8 March at 8.10pm. There’s also a short film festival-within-a-festival on Wednesday from 7.30pm, and a live musical accompaniment to Segundo de Chomon’ silent shorts on Monday 22 March from 6.30pm.

Upstairs in Cornerhouse’s Gallery 1, Carlos Amorales, one of Mexico’s leading contemporary artists, has just opened an exhibition that runs for the duration of Viva! (6-27 March). I took a peak yesterday… it’s very video- and ambient music-heavy, in a good way.

If you follow Whitworth Street West down from Cornerhouse and take a left just before Deansgate, you’ll find yourself at Castlefield Gallery. Right now, this often-neglected space is playing host to a two-person exhibition by Leo Fitzmaurice and Kim Rugg – full of pain-stakingly detailed montages of ‘communication art’. Read CreativeTourist.com’s write-up of this exhibition, which continues until 3 April. It’s well worth the eight-minute walk.

Here’s an event that’s been cleverly marketed over the past few weeks, with vague stickers in shop windows and such throughout Manchester city centre:

I’m Here, a 30-minute short film; is at the heart of the new Absolut campaign, ‘In An Absolut World, Ordinary Is No Place To Be’. I’m Here, a robot love story ‘In An Absolut World’, is set in LA and celebrates a life enriched by creativity.

The highly anticipated film collaboration with Spike Jonze will be launched nationwide this month, with a series of exclusive screenings in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Across the UK, billboards and graffiti sites have subtly built intrigue around the collaboration, offering consumers the chance to attend exclusive preview screenings of the film ‘in no ordinary places’.

In Manchester, ‘no ordinary places’ equates to a car park – the shiny, round, silver one in Shudehill to be exact.

Salford Film Festival is seeking short films and features for the Sixth Salford Film Festival, scheduled for the third week of November 2009, final dates to be confirmed. The Festival prides itself on having a local accent but a truly international perspective: We are particularly keen to receive work with a strong Salford connection (and failing that a Greater Manchester or North West focus), but we welcome submissions from all over the world.

Submission forms and contact details are available from the festival’s website. There’s no submission fee and the deadline’s still a while away – the end of August to be exact. Good luck.

The Manchester Film Co-operative is a non-commercial group that runs a monthly film night at the Kings Arms, one of Manchester’s (well, Salford’s) best pubs. It launched in May 2008 and has since offered a selection of films aiming to ‘challenge current economics, politics and society’:

Screenings are followed by informal discussions led, where possible, by activists and experts. They provide a lively and friendly space in which progressive alternatives and ideas can be explored. The screenings bring together a diverse range of people and groups committed to exploring political alternatives as well as specialist cinema fans. It aims to inform, educate and inspire as many people as possible through film and discussion.

This month’s event – tomorrow, Tuesday 20 January (7.45pm, £3) – features Garbage Warrior, a film that’s apparently about a guy who creates a radical solution for sustainable housing, waste and power. The discussion afterwards will be hosted by Urbed, another Manchester-based co-operative specialising in urban design, renegeration, sustainability and community involvement.

I’ve never heard of Garbage Warrior, nor really any of the other films they’ve shown – but it looks like an interesting group and well worth checking out. It being a co-operative, you can buy a share (for £5) and get involved by proposing films, speakers, themes and the like.

MFC is similar to the Chorlton Film Insitute that I mentioned previously. That institute continues with Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead on Thursday 19 February at St Clement’s Church.

It’s a busy week here at Mancubist towers so here’s a quick mid-week, mid-November round-up…

The biggest event this week is surely the re-opening yesterday of the Manchester Christmas Markets. The largest one, in Albert Square, is open daily, 10am until 9pm, right through to 22 December. For more information, including opening times for the other four – in St Ann’s Square and on Exchange Street, New Cathedral Street and Brazennose Street (here’s a map) – check out the council website.

Inside the town hall, meanwhile, the two-day NOISE Festival – Creative Futures event is currently taking place to promote careers in creative industries. Today’s schedule (10am-6pm) features portfolio reviews, one-to-ones, careers advice and a busking corner, plus an unsigned showcase and panel, and a seminar on art direction by Amelia’s Magazine. Warp Films and Badly Drawn Boy, who played last night, are among this year’s big-name curators.

Elsewhere, there are plenty of great gigs again this week: tonight, the Faint play at Academy 3, supported by an interesting Polar Bear-related band, the Invisible (‘the Invisible Band’ would be a better name…). Or Parenthetical Girls are playing across the road at the small but perfectly formed Kro Bar. And on Friday, Four Tet’s Keiran Hebden returns with drummer Steve Reid.

Salford Film Festival is also in full flow at the moment – great to see it back after last year’s near-cancellation. It runs until 23 November at venues including Salford Arts Theatre, the Lowry, Islington MIll and the Theatre Organ Heritage Centre. Check out the day-by-day guide here.

Oh, and the Spinningfields Ice Rink opens tomorrow, Thursday 20 November, and for the first week it’s just £5 for all skaters.

The Spotlights Bar at the Library Theatre will host a wine fair on Friday, 6pm-9pm. You’re invited to try 50 top wines from around the world (plus some malt whiskys) with live entertainment also provided.
This Sunday is ‘First Sunday’ for the loiterers resistance movement over at the Nowhere Fest blog. To celebrate (?), they’re organising a walk ‘focused around the CCTV cameras which guard the people’s republic of Mancunia’. ‘We may lead you delightfully astray but we promise it’s all perfectly legal,’ they say, adding that the walk will probably be followed by music and refreshments. Meet at Cafe Pop, in the basement of Pop Boutique on Oldham Street, between 1pm and 2pm if you’re interested in some Channel Four-less Big Brother viewing. More info via loiter@hepzombie.co.uk or on 07974929589.

Tickets for Friday and Saturday have been given away now but today, Thurday, is a free, non-ticketed event featuring interactive installations, DJs (Charlatan members, Dave Haslam and Simon’s Mobile Disco), short films, plus food and drink.

Have a good one!

I paid a visit to Urbis on Friday, mainly to check out the aforementioned Best of Manchester exhibition (the Rags to Bitches and UHC work being the highlights). The place is full of exhibitions at the moment though, from the welcome greenery of Urban Gardening to the ever-so-bright Matthew Williamson fashion retrospective.

I’m saving How Manga Took Over The World, which opened in March and runs until 27 September, for a rainy day. Feedback for the exhibition, which looked pretty substantial from the floor above, has been hit and miss so far.

And, for some reason, not much has been mentioned about the accompanying anime film screenings throughout the summer months:

Urbis is open until 8pm from July on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. To celebrate the long summer nights we have organised evening anime screenings, as part of the Manga exhibition. Manga movies for kids will show every Thursday in August.

We’re half way through the schedule now but remaining highlights include Howl’s Moving Castle (21 August), Spirited Away (28 August), Animatrix (12 September) and – saving possibly the biggest anime masterpiece til last – Akira (20 September).

All screenings are free but places are on a first come, first served basis.

You may recall that a fringe-of-sorts ran alongside last year’s Manchester International Festival. Its organisers then returned in mid-January, for Not Part of New Years Eve – and they’re now makes a third outing for their own arts festival this summer.

Lasting 10 days (3-12 July), the inaugural festival features 29 events – plus four one-day sub-festivals. Again, Not Part of Festival seeks to gain extra publicity for its theatre, comedy, music, poetry, film and art events by placing them under one name.

The Not Part of website, which has a full brochure, keeps timing out for me but, from yesterday’s newsletter, here are some potential highlights:

Theatre: Below the Belt @ The Waldorf Hotel

Theatre: 2 Plays, 2 Writers, 1 Cast @ Adelphi Studio, Salford

Poetry: Latvian Poets @ Central Library

Exhibition: Hats off to Cheetham Hill @ The Jewish Museum

Multi-disciplinary: Not Part of NYE (redux) @ Moho Live

Art and music: Birds Need Trees (Jim Noir, Aidan Smith etc) @ Urbis

The organisers are asking people to be part of Not Part of – so email them if you can film parts of the festival or just want to volunteer generally. You can also visit Not Part of on Facebook and Myspace, or read a Q&A with organiser Gareth McMann here.
