Manchester music: Kimya Dawson and other Monkey business
I’m getting quite a few hits from people searching for ‘Kimya Dawson Manchester’ or similar. Kimya is an anti-folkster who, when not recording solo albums or looking after her new daughter Panda Deliah, works with Adam Green in the Moldy Peaches. Have a listen here.
Anyway, for all you people desperate for information, she’s playing the Burlington Rooms on the University of Manchester campus next Wednesday, June 27. It’s £5 entry on the door (£2.50 for under-16s) and the venue is a cafe next to the John Rylands Library. Email humey@riseup.net if you need more information.
Further down Oxford Road, the team behind Gorillaz will be offering up their rather ambitious Monkey: Journey to the West opera project at the Palace Theatre. All tickets for this preview night cost £10 and, while Ticketmaster claims there are none left, I understand there are some available at the venue itself. Don’t quote me on that though.
I hear sales for the Damon Albarn-penned opera have been slow generally – prompting Manchester International Festival’s media partner, the Guardian, to give it plenty of coverage in the paper of late. I hope for everyone’s sake that the end product is half as good as the hype has been.

I’d love to go see Monkey, unfortunately the ticketmaster site hasn’t been very helpful:

who knows this may even help to explain the slow uptake of tickets?

I had huge trouble myself when booking Manchester Dines through Ticketmaster – resorted to emailing MIF. They sorted it the same day, to be fair, but it is a bit worrying.
