Afflecks Palace: the petition and developments
It had to happen, didn’t it? One of Manchester’s most famous landmarks is placed under threat - someone starts an online petition.
Over 4,000 signatures in little over a month is impressive going, and gives some indication of how precious the place is to many. My post on Mancubist has attracted 15 comments too:
Manchester will be like any other city without it.
It is closing on the 16th June I’ve heard.
Well, if it’s one less place for poseurs to congregate it can’t be all that bad!
And via the fancy new search function on the MEN site, here’s the latest:
The future of Manchester’s Afflecks Palace looks brighter with a new lease proposal on the table. Bosses from the Northern Quarter shopping emporium have met advisers to discuss terms after the contract expires in June.
Bruntwood managing director Chris Oglesby dismissed fears that the building could be turned into luxury apartments. He said: “Our intention is not to redevelop the Afflecks building. But we cannot make any firm assurances.”

I remember being mesmerised (and also a bit confused…) when I first stumbled into Affleck’s Palace two years ago - it’s so cool to have a place other than big chains and franchises. Let’s hope it’ll remain there!

We need to be lobbying councillors over Afflecks.
I’ll be talking to Kathy Crotty - Labour’s candidate for the city centre in May’s local elections.

I’ve spoken to Kathy.
She is holding public meeting on Sunday March 25 to discuss city centre issues.
It starts at 6pm in committee room 1 in Manchester Town Hall. Also present will be the council’s city centre spokesman Councillor Pat Karney.
Kathy would like to hear people’ views on Affleck’s Palace.

Afflecks palace is a relaxed environment for everyone who is “unique”. It shouldn’t be shut down, not for anybody or anything. Afflecks palace is simply awesome, something i read in an article on the MEN website about this, was that tourists do actually travel a fair distance just to visit Manchester, and one of its great attractions being a shop to many, and an all in all amazing place to visit. Afflecks palace has given alot to people, both mentally and physically, because people compliment others on their new clothes (bought from afflecks) and causes them to gain new friends. Afflecks palace is the place to be, if they shut it down… everybody will cease to visit manchester often, and manchester will become immensely CRAP.

Keep Affleck’s ope.. It is a part of manchesters heritage now.. you wont find anywhere in manchester for anything like you find in that centre and where the hell are all those shops ment to go.. do you not think of how many people will be suffering due to the concequences of closing…

OMG!!! Aflecks cant be closed down for some rubbish flats its been there for so long and its a part of manchester! Its a great place to go for the day may be a bit weird but thats whats good about it if it does close which i hope does not happen there will be no point in going to manchester only for some other ordinary shops.

It saddens me and in turn angers me that afflecks is to be closed. Obviously this decision is whimsicle, a sort of decision that causes great catastrophes and certainly will be for Manchester. Blundering Idiots, especially those in politics moan about the younger generations upto stuff on the streets so why do they allow such things to happen to important places like Afflecks. Of course its capital, where the big bucks are, no chance for the little people. But we not going to stand for that arnt we. Oh yeah!!!!!!
By andrew craven on 04.02.08 11:22 am
please dont close aflecks palace ive been going there since i was a kid, its part of manchester and you cant buy the stuff they have in there any where else believe me im going mon for a leather jacket after not finding one in bolton bury or manchester i know ill get one there
By denise graham on 07.17.08 7:37 pm
It was bad enough losing the Corn Exchange and Oasis. Afflecks is the last of them. lets not lose that too. Or at least if the building is to go ,then give the traders a new place. I have been going to Afflecks for years. And now my kids go there. You can`t get the same merchandise anywhere else
