Will Manchester 235 close?
That’s what those over at the Manchester Clubbing blog reckon anyway. They’ve seen Teasers ‘go tits up’ (their words) and now warn that, without action, Manchester’s newest casino will soon follow.
And you can’t help put think that they’re on to something. Besides Teasers’ failure, they also point to the always-empty screens at the AMC Great Northern cinema and to 235’s recent adverts in the MEN, claiming ‘Manchester already has a super-casino!’
I’ve heard so-so things about their live music space too – bands playing to the backs of punters, too distracted by 235’s other delights. Jay Taylor, former booker for Night & Day on Oldham Street, became the venue’s musical director.
But – fear not – those lovely Manchester Clubbing folk have hatched a plan to save 235, which only opened in the second half of last year. In a note aimed at the casino’s manager, they talk of an idea that will earn millions.
Personally, I read their blog url with interest: great-northern-warehouse-project.html. With December’s Boddingtons factory nights going so well, perhaps that’s a hint of what Manchester Clubbing proposes.
With the super-casino-elect not opening in Eastlands for another 2-3 years, is there time yet for Manchester 235 to save itself?

235 are a bit like Opus in that they will turn their noses up at a punter for wearing too stripey a shirt. So forgive me if I don’t shed a tear when they go under do to lack of clientele.

I don’t wear shirts so maybe I’d be fine.
The only time I tried to enter 235 was during In The City, where I waited and waited and waited for the stupid registration process, only to be ignored at the front of the queue. I put it down to new staff at the time and left.

Had a similar experience during In The City re queueing for registration but eventually lost patience and left. Haven’t been back since. No doubt the casino side makes more money than the venue side, but having a venue in there has always seemed idiotic. Promoters at venues of that size often rely upon ‘walk ups’ and I imagine the whole registration process deters most people from this. If it does go under, its as much a loss to Manchester as Teasers…

Jay ‘left’ 235 a little while back.
