The best of luck? Manchester wins a supercasino
So an apparently ’shocked’ Manchester has landed the rights to build the UK’s first Las Vegas-style supercasino. It was a rank outsider, with odds of 16-1.
The council predicts 2,700 new jobs at the 5,000 square metre site at Eastlands in East Manchester. But local Liberal Democrat MP John Leech wasn’t celebrating:
“I just don’t think at a time when gambling is on the increase, and addiction is on the increase, I don’t believe this is a sensible way forward for Manchester,” he told Sky News.
With up to 1,250 slot machines planned for the new casino, and with it being built in one of the city’s most deprived areas, I can see his point. Of course, the hope is that the casino will lead to further regeneration.
Personally, I would have much preferred our North Westerly neighbour, Blackpool, to have won the licence – at least there gambling is already part of everyday life. What do you think?

I think it is an expensive way of passing time.
A better way would be to read some inspirational or motivational material.

I agree with you entirely, I think the super-casino should definitely have gone to Blackpool. Manchester already has a great deal of regeneration initiatives. As a fan of Blackpool from childhood visits in the 1960s, I say Blackpool should have got it! Thanks for some excellent and informative posts, Mancubist!
