John Lennon Imagine charity gig @ RNCM

I just received an email about this event taking place on December 22:

The gig has been arranged by my brother James Harrington, who has worked with several of the artists on the lineup, on behalf of his son Harry, who had a life-saving operation at Alder Hey hospital in Liverpool last year. The John Lennon Imagine Appeal supports Alder Hey and families of children receiving treatment there.

And, whether for charity or not, the line up is pretty spectacular:

Badly Drawn Boy
Stephen Fretwell
Elbow
Lazybones, Autopilot, Nomad Jones

All playing acoustic sets in aid of children’s charity, the John Lennon ‘IMAGINE’ Appeal at RNCM’s Bruntwood Theatre.

Doors 7pm-11pm
Tickets 17.50

RNCM
124 Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9RD.

Fantastic news! Thanks a lot for posting this - will do my best to get there!

I’ve been there, but have been pinching myself throughout the gig. Was it really a ‘John Lennon Imagine charity gig’, or did I imagine it would be?

Why, what happened? Was it any good?

Well, I must say, I haven’t been to many gigs (I frequent the cinema instead). But just didn’t like the *coolness* of certain performers. Also, couldn’t stop marvelling at some things. One of the guys in the first half sang his single, which he said was the best song he’d ever written. Sounds like the most boring song I’ve ever heard, hardly any melody, hardly any voice. Followed that by three other songs of his, turned out the guy has got a really good voice and is quite a good performer. I really don’t get something.

What I meant in the previous comment is that it was simply different musicians and bands playing their songs, but none of John Lennon. And this puzzles me. So it was a charity gig, but hardly had anything to do with Lennon.

It was a great gig, very relaxed, funny and intimate. Particular highlights were Elbow (lead singer is great with a crowd) and Autopilot (nice to have a break from singer/songrwriters, and great tunes).

BDB was good but went on a bit (as usual).

Thanks goodness there were no Lennon covers to twee things up.
