Manchester seems to be pretty bicycle obsessed at the moment: first there’s the Levenshulme Bicycle Orchestra, which I mentioned last week.

Then I received word from Creative Concern that their advertising campaign to get Mancunians out of their cars and onto bikes won first prize at Wednesday’s Green Awards in London.

Love Your Bike - promoted by Manchester Friends of the Earth and Manchester City Council - featured this risque viral video:

The ‘Fast Lane Fat Lane’ campaign also appeared on billboards, postcards and on the back of over 100 buses. Here’s how it looked:

I also received a comment from Manc cyclist Nes on MySpace about Manchester Critical Mass:

Critical Mass is a monthly mass bike ride that takes place every last friday of the month at 6pm outside central library M1 (UK). On the last Friday of each month cyclists ride through the roads of Manchester at rush hour to celebrate the bicycle and to show what the roads could look like if they were filled with sustainable transportation instead of being ruled by the automobile and to show that bikes are traffic and have a legitimate right to be in the street.

The final Critical Mass of 2006 is on December 29, then the 2007 dates are January 26, February 23, March 30, April 27 and May 25. Join the mailing list here if you’re interested.
