The Bridgewater Hall goes all folky
I’ve been updating Mancubist’s recommended Manchester gigs calendar and I noticed Bridgewater Hall is hosting three very impressive folk/alt-country nights in January:
Joanna Newsom and Alasdair Roberts - 15 January 2007
Twisted Folk: Vashti Bunyan, Adem, Vetiver, Juana Molina - 19 January 2007
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy - 24 January 2007
Though not yet billed as one, this nine day programme seems be worthy of a festival title - Manchester Folkfest perhaps? Every man and his hobby is getting one these days, after all.
And I wonder, only half jokingly, what with these artists taking over Manchester’s premier classical venue and Newsom performing with the Northern Sinfonia: is folk becoming the new classical music?

We saw Vashti Bunion in, ahem, Seattle recently. My goodness, she was terrible. She had absolutely no idea about how to communicate with an audience. It took a lot of patience to sit through that, and I really did want her to be good, she just wasn’t. We were only there keeping our seats for when Jose Gonzales came on, who was Top Banana. I’d like to see Adem though. Tough call.

Oh, how nice!
I just got the Joanna Newsom Ys album yesterday and I’ve been listening to it on the bus this morning. It’s quite lovely isn’t it? I especially like the description of the difference between meteors, meteorites and meteoroids.
