Hedge Folk club at the Carlton Club, Whalley Range
This week is a particularly busy one for music: on Monday, you had a choice between The Spinto Band, Neko Case or The Flaming Lips, while yesterday Tapes ‘n’ Tapes was your best bet and tomorrow TV on the Radio should be great.
But in my opinion the Carlton Club, in Whalley Range but very close to Chorlton, hosts this week’s top event. Hedge is a New Folk night. The difference between New Folk and Old Folk is subtle: the former boasts just as many beards, it’s just that they’re attached to younger faces.
This Friday’s event is Hedge’s first birthday and features a typically strong lineup: Little Green, Fake Rolex, Strung Out, Corn Capri, Josephine Oniyama, Cortina Deluxx and special guest DJ Dunk Le Chunk (of Red Deer Club fame).
It’s always packed and goes on well into the night (it was 1am when I stumbled out last time). Door price is £8, which is higher than normal, but that includes a compilation CD of Hedge favourites.
Advance tickets are also available from Piccadilly Records and the Carlton Club (0161 881 3042).
