ITC: How to spot an A&R man

Simple – look for any combination of these:

  1. He’s the guy wearing a suit
  2. He’s the guy on his own
  3. He’s the guy who’s over 35
  4. He’s the guy not clapping

In The City 2006 draws to a close tonight. A friend commented how it wasn’t advertised so well this year. I disagree – I saw posters everywhere.

The registration staff looked pleased when they told me their system was faster than for the Labour Party Conference. I didn’t really mind, I just wanted my free bag.

Act of the festival: Eugene McGuinness – Liverpool-based, Irish-sounding acoustic solo guy. Great vocal range and ingenius conversational lyrics. Should support Patrick Wolf or Bat for Lashes.

Seminar of the festival: Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired magazine and author of The Long Tail, doing a Q&A session on speakerphone because his video link-up wouldn’t work. “Bleeding-edge technology,” said Tony Wilson, because it never bleeding works.

David Sue also published a guide to spotting A&R men in the Time Out sample issue. He said:

They never pay to get in
They never applaud
They always buy the biggest rounds
They are always surrounded by musicians and promoters

sounds like you guys were on the same wavelength there… But now we know how to spot them, the more important question: how do you get them to buy you lots of drinks on the company dime?

True, true. I see a lot of lone A&R men though – maybe they’re the bad ones?
