A look at Time Out Manchester Issue 1

Back from my holidays and slowly getting up to date.

Time Out Manchester Issue 1Issue 1 of Time Out Manchester is out now and it reads like the one-off city guide it was intended to be.

It’s like a much more comprehensive version of the bi-monthly In Your Pocket guides that I’ve been reading around Europe lately.

The listings are great - and much needed, as an Urban75 user points out:

About time as well that we got our own mag after the demise of City Life. I keep missing lots of good events just because I dont find out about them till later but not anymore.

Maybe some more features though? We haven’t all got the two-minute attention span of a Heat reader, you know.

I also had trouble finding a copy until the Manchizzle pointed out that WH Smiths is stocking it. Even there, it’s not on the shelves next to Time Out London et al - you’ve got to ask for it.

Anyway, it’s a solid start and I can’t wait to see how it fares on a weekly basis. See Stephen Newton’s site for further comment.

UPDATE: A couple more opinions at The World Turned Upside Down and Levenshulme Life.

I thought it was a well boring magazine… Same old writers, same themes over and over again. I don’t think the market will support the magazine. The number of tourists coming to the area buying it for its brand name will be low, and locals getting free papers morning and evening will not be interested either.
Perhaps if the Big Issue could be a bit better in the local events department… shame to see its market squeezed even more, especially by Time Out: Not exactly a success for local entrepreneurship. Something new, saying something new is what is required. Professional Mancs, and professional journalists have thier place, but after a while (say since Madchester - nearly 20 years?) their copy gets a tad dull.

Smart-looking and let’s face it Timeout is a nice-looking brand, but is anyone else fearful it’s going to go down the Xfm route and become a tragic parody of a Manchester that’s long gone? Let’s take a look under the surface. That’s what City Life did when it started out.
