Telegraph PM vs Guardian G24
The Guardian on Saturday carried Guardian Unlimited editor-in-chief’s response to The Telegraph’s new “click and carry” evening update, Telegraph PM. In it Emily Bell points out:
It is only published once a day, at 4pm, and has the slightly baffling feature of video embedded in the PDF, which obviously doesn’t translate well when you hit the print command.
She quoted The Telegraph’s Managing Director Will Lewis calling The Guardian’s own printable version, G24, “a disgrace”.
I’ve blogged about G24 before, praising the innovation, but comparing the two head-to-head, Telegraph PM does look the more impressive product:
PM is laid out like a newspaper and features a digest, weather forecast, TV listings, ‘your views’ and even a cartoon.
G24, on the other hand, seems to pull its copy and the odd image direct from the website. It’s really a no-frills/no-thrills service in comparison.
In fact, the only real let-down for Telegraph PM is that it is published once a day compared to the impressive 15 minute intervals of G24. It’ll be interesting to see who’s first to reach the middle ground between the two versions.
Finally, I wholeheartedly agree with this comment made by online publishing expert Rebeca Cliffe:
Interestingly, if users become more accustomed to reading a “click and carry” service online or offline, the idea of a ‘Daily Me’ publication becomes more viable - individual newspapers might be assembled online according to the user’s interests and consumed according to their preference.
