The Tube returns - as a radio show
Another hat-tip to Manchester Clubbing, who tell us that influential 80s music series The Tube is returning - and this time it’ll be broadcasting from Manchester. From the BBC:
Iconic music show The Tube is to return after a 19-year absence on Channel 4’s internet radio station.
The broadcaster said the revived show, featuring major stars as well as new and unsigned acts, would pay homage to the original but also be distinctive.
The Tube launched in the channel’s opening week in 1982 and made TV stars of presenters Jools Holland and Paula Yates. It was axed in 1987.
The new series, which Manchester Clubbing say will also be shown on Channel 4, is to be recorded live in front of a studio audience. Both Anthony Wilson (Factory Records) and Andy Rourke (The Smiths) are expected to be involved.
The Tube featured Manchester frequently during its five-series run, including most famously Madonna’s UK debut at the Hacienda.
The show was previously resurrected by Sky One for a one-off millennium special featuring Belle & Sebastian. (And, while you’re there, note the second news short at that last link.)
